Apprentices in Huron County are invited to apply for the HMA/ United Communities Credit Union Apprenticeship Scholarships. Four scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded at the Manufacturing Excellence Awards on November 15, 2012. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2012.

ENTRY LEVEL – STUDIO TEAM (Carving & Finishing Ice Sculptures)

Iceculture, a recognized world leader in the hospitality ice business has an immediate entry level position for a full time studio team member.

The successful candidate will receive training in this unique role of finishing and carving ice sculptures and learning to utilize all the equipment in our studio. Equipment such as chainsaws, chisels, dremmels, sanders, lathes. The individual will learn to clean, finish wrap and label works of art made in ice.Employing approximately 30 people, this company is one of the largest of its kind in the world and is located in Hensall Ontario. Involvement with high profile projects such as the Superbowl, the Ice Bridge, the Raptors “the Bounce is Back” campaign, and the production of precision ice projectiles for NASA testing, this company provides an exciting opportunity for the right individual.

This is position is full time and will require some shift work, extended hours including weekends where needed to meet production requirements.

The successful candidate will have:

• Grade 12 diploma or equivalent

• Some experience with power hand tools (Dremmels, grinders, sanders)Chainsaws,Chisels

• Strong organizational skills

• Keen attention to detail

• Enthusiastic, creative, hardworking work ethic

• Preference to work in a team orientated culture.

• Ability to handle heavy ice with appropriate equipment and extended periods in a walk-in freezer environment (-8 degrees) is required.

• Sculpting experience an asset.

New Exporters to Border States (NEBS)

Mission to Buffalo

May 16-17, 2012

You are cordially invited to participate in the next NEBS Mission to Buffalo on Wednesday, May 16 and Thursday, May 17, 2012.

NEBS is a practical, cost-effective program ideally suited to give Ontario manufacturers, distributors, agents and other business professionals the tools they need to easily expand their business interests across the border. The NEBS program offers guidelines to Ontario businesses for USA sales, shipping and business transactions. The NEBS program is organized by the International Trade Branch of the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation and the Canadian Consulate General in Buffalo.

Expert briefings on a range of topics include dealing with border issues such as U.S. business travel and immigration requirements, currency exchange options, business planning, taxation, and legal considerations and U.S. Customs clearance procedures. Participants will visit a fulfillment warehouse in Buffalo. In addition, a briefing on provincial and federal trade programs and services will be provided along with one-on-one meetings with the trade commissioners at the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo.

The University of Waterloo will be extending its highly successful Applied Research and Commercialization (ARC) Initiative, aimed at encouraging collaboration between research institutions and commercialization through small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in southern Ontario. This program will offer grants aimed at pre-commercialization activities in the areas of applied research, engineering design, technology development, product testing, and certification and its goal is to accelerate innovation and improve productivity and competitiveness in SMEs located in Southern Ontario.

The University of Waterloo would like to call to SMEs in your county to partner with us and take advantage of this opportunity today!

Please extend this offer of collaboration to SMEs (with fewer than 1000 employees) in your area who may be interested in collaborating with the University of Waterloo. In addition, I would be happy if you could put me in touch with any other business associations or chambers in your county. With your assistance, I would like to arrange a visit to some of the top companies in your area to share information about the program. Due to the tight timelines of this program, I am planning to visit companies April 30, May 1, 2.

With a longstanding culture of academic research, industry collaboration, community and academia, the University of Waterloo is a natural partner for you in such collaboration.
